4 Shutter Myths Revealed

April 03, 2017

We spend a lot of time talking to residents about shutters in Philadelphia.

And though it may be surprising, when we talk with homeowners across Philly, we hear a couple of myths about shutters floating around. Let’s spend a few minutes to set the facts straight and dispel some common myths surrounding shutters so you can make the perfect choice for your space when you want new window treatments.

Myth: Shutters Are Easy to Install Yourself

Lots of home projects are simple enough to do by yourself in just one day. Putting in shutters probably isn’t one of them, though.

Installing new shutters can be tricky from the get-go, as the measurements of the dimensions of your windows must be extremely precise to ensure an easy and tight fit, as well as to enable proper operation of your windows. Depending on the shutter material, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, hoisting large shutter panels and installing them straight can present a tough task. If a single part of the process is done incorrectly, you could end up with misshapen shutters or frequent drafts from ill-fitting weather-stripping.

Myth: Shutters Will Make Your Home Look Dim

Less-informed home designers might not prefer shutters, claiming they’ll make a home look dark or dimly lit. This myth likely stems from unfamiliarity with plantation shutters.

Think of this: outside light will always enter into your home from an angle. An interior shutter will give you the ability to alter that angle by adjusting their louvers, offering you better control over how much light comes inside. And bear in mind, shutters are able to swing open all the way to allow as much light as you might want.

Myth: Shutters Are Too Expensive

It’s accurate that shutters won’t be as cheap as common blinds from a big box store. However this myth is all about how you’re thinking about shutters. If you’re thinking shutters as just a simple decoration that isn’t expected to last more than a year or two, then yes, shutters are fairly expensive. But shutters are a permanent addition to your home, and have several benefits: they’re energy efficient and can lower heat and air conditioning bills, they can add to the value of your home, and shutters can last decades, unlike blinds–which will have to be replaced over and over again.

Myth: Shutters Make a Home Look Old-Timey

Perhaps the name “plantation shutters” has caused the myth that shutters are only good for old houses, but it certainly isn’t true. While shutters were typical for older home styles stretching back decades, their straight, clean geometry and neutral shades let them fit in with more fashionable, up-to-date designs just as seamlessly. Interior shutters are the definition of versatile window treatments.
